Orthopedics encompasses conditions of the musculoskeletal system and treating skeletal deformities. One issue affecting the hand and wrist is carpal tunnel syndrome. This condition centers on a passageway within the wrist that allows tendons and the median nerve to pass through and move the fingers. Tightness or injuries to the region can lead to swollen tissues and the tunnel pressing against the median nerve. This result in symptoms such as tingling in the hand, numbness, pain, and loss of motor function. With symptoms developing gradually, they have a tendency to be more severe on the hand’s thumb side. Once thought to be primarily caused by repetitive movements such as typing, the syndrome is now believed to have to do with congenital predisposition and a narrow carpal tunnel. With other causes including fracture, sprain, and habitual movement, the condition may also arise from thyroid disease, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, or pregnancy. Nonsurgical interventions such as physical therapy and pain medicine are recommended initially. Those who experience persistent pain for more than six months may also consider carpal tunnel release, a surgery that effectively expands the carpal tunnel.
